That, being a vector graphics program, it's incidentally a cost-free alternative to Illustrator has nothing to do with Inkscape itself, only with the people who don't like the other program. Personally, I've never used Illustrator, so for me, it doesn't even matter if that exists or not. I enjoy being here and helping other users, though, and I use Inkscape to create my graphics for the events I organize.

The import is one of many features (personally, I wouldn't need it at all), and Inkscape is an open source program, with limited developer resources. Everyone who uses Inkscape can contribute to its development. Any complaining is kind of directed at the wrong people, because ultimately, it's the users who build their own program.
