PCB Design Software
You can use any software you like, as long as it can producea PDF of your board.
If it can print to paper it can print to a pdf printer driver.
Our hole recognition software will take care of the rest.
You could even use Corel Draw or Autocad - no problem just print to PDF995 a generic pdf printer driver.

Express PCB
ExpressPCB is very easy to learn. It is a free download.
It is great for someone who wants to make the occasional easy board.

These files need to be installed on your system.
Now you are ready to work.
Open your hard worked at file with ExpressPCB. Click print. On the form
that appears on top you have scroll down and choose to where you would like to
print the document. Choose print to PDF995
The program will print/convert the normal choices given by the program for
the different layers to a PDF file. The file can then be read and printed as
any other normal PDF file.

Eagle PCB Software
Eagle is very powerful software. It is used by professionals and dedicated hobbyists.
You can download a free evaluation version which is restricted in board size.
Or you can buy a more powerful version to suit your needs.

Recent versions of Eagle produce a pdf from the print menu.
First select the layers you want to print to pdf from the layers menu.
For a single sided board with the tracks on the bottom layer:
- Select Layers: Bottom, Pads, Vias, Dimension
- UnSelect all other layers. Make sure you scroll down the list.
Now select print and print to pdf. Use your board name and version number as the pdf file name.

For a double side board, make a pdf of the bottom layer as above.
Then repeat the procedure with layers:
- Select Layers: Top, Pads, Vias, Dimension

Gerbv a Gerber Viewer
Gerbv is a free (GPL) gerber viewer. It reads RS-274X Gerber files and produces excellent pdf files.

Tango to Postscript
Do you still use Tango? It is an old DOS based PCB layout program, but still has it's die-hard users.
Tango can make a perfect postscript file. Postscript is as good as pdf.

- Click on Menu.
- Select Output.
- Select Plot/Print.
- Mark output options as required and Click OK.
- In drivers box select Postscript -- Printer Port should be set to file.
- Set scale 1:1
- Enter output filename eg bottom.ps and click OK.
- After output completed the 'Output Plot/Print' box pops up again. Cancel it and return to the main menu.
- Check the postscript file with ghostview downloadable from adobe or try the online postscript viewer: http://view.samurajdata.se/
- Email the postscript file (bottom.ps) to cboards.
PDF from Protel
Protel Design Explorer 99 SE seems to be commonly used. Below are instruction on printing to pdf.
Erich used Acrobat PDFwriter as a PDF printer driver. We recommend using PDF995 a generic pdf printer driver.
Sometimes users struggle to print out the layers in the correct order. The trick is selecting Multilayer in the instructions below.
If your tracks are going into the holes, you will need to reorder the layers so that the holes are printed over the tracks.

Here's a short description of how to generate a PDF layout from PROTEL. I used 'Design Explorer 99 SE, Service Pack 6'
- First there needs to be a printer driver to which Windows can print and which generates a PDF file, mine appears as 'Acrobat PDFwriter'.
- When the PCB document is displayed, click 'File - Print/Preview...'
- Select Tab 'Browse PCBPrint' on the left-hand panel.
- Right-click on the first line which displays the usual printer driver, select 'Properties...' and:
- under 'Printer', select a PDF driver
- under 'Print What' select 'Standard Print'
- OK
- right-click 'Multilayer Composite Print'
- 'Layers': delete all except 'MultiLayer' and ('Top Layer' or 'Bottom Layer')
'MultiLayer' is to be listed first to ensure the correct drawing sequence
if it is not, select 'MultilLayer' and click on 'Move Up' - 'Components': all items to be selected
- 'Options': tick 'Show Holes'
- 'Color Set': tick 'Black & White'
- OK
- Clicking the tab 'Process PCB' will update the layout
- to make the PDF file, click 'File' - 'Print Page' and follow the instructions.
